Social-impact mobile game — gamified animal welfare funding through engaging gameplay
Pet Escape was a social-impact mobile project developed under Boozer Game Studios — a gamified product designed to fund real-world animal welfare initiatives. Combining engaging gameplay mechanics with a non-profit-leaning mission, the project demonstrated how mobile games could serve as a vehicle for social change while maintaining the polish and playability expected of a commercial title.
On the Unity implementation side, I built the full UI system using Unity’s Canvas-based UI with a screen navigation manager that handled transitions between the main menu, gameplay HUD, and reward screens. The core game loop used a timer-based level system where players completed rescue objectives within a time limit, with a scoring multiplier that rewarded efficient play. I implemented the Android build pipeline from scratch — configuring the Android SDK, managing texture compression for mobile GPUs, handling back-button behavior, and optimizing draw calls through sprite atlas batching to maintain 60 FPS on mid-range devices.
The social impact game design presented unique challenges. The game needed to feel rewarding and fun while maintaining sensitivity around animal welfare themes — I designed the rescue mechanics to emphasize positive outcomes (rehabilitation, adoption) rather than showing distress. The monetization model was a careful balance: optional ad-supported boosts and cosmetic items funded the real-world donations, but I deliberately avoided pay-to-win mechanics that would undermine the mission. This required tuning the economy so that free players could complete the full experience while incentivizing optional purchases that directly funded animal welfare partners.
As Founder and Lead Developer at Boozer Game Studios (2015–2022), I led the full development cycle — from concept through Android release — building the game in Unity with C#. The project required balancing compelling gameplay loops with the sensitivity required for cause-driven content, ensuring players remained engaged while contributing to a meaningful mission. This title reinforced my ability to ship polished mobile experiences across the full Unity stack, while also navigating the unique challenges of social-impact product design — audience alignment, mission-driven narrative integration, and stakeholder coordination between game development and non-profit objectives. It remains one of the most distinctly purposeful projects in my portfolio.
